Sensō-ji Temple: The History, Spirit, and Beauty

Sensō-ji Temple is the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo, founded over 1,300 years ago by two humble fishermen brothers, Hinokuma Hamanari and Hinokuma Takenari while fishing in the Sumida River. They pulled out their net and to their astonishment pulled up not fish but a small golden statue of Kannon Bosatsu, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy. No matter how many times they returned the statue to the River, it found its way back, a sign they could not ignore. The village chief, Hajino Nakamoto enshrined the statue in a small temple which grew into Sensoji, now celebrated as Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist Temple. Today, the main hall and five-story pagoda are among the city’s can’t-miss landmarks, with rituals, art, and daily worship drawing thousands of visitors from Japan and around the world.

Beyond the Main Attractions: Asakusa’s Hidden Highlights & Top Things to do

The Kartzilla Go Kart experience reveals more than just landmarks — they explore the soul of Tokyo.

You’ll discover:

  • Side streets that will teleport you back to distant eras and famous shrines few tourists ever find
  • Picture-perfect views across the Sumida River, especially at sunset
  • Energetic festival sites — if you happen to ride during Sanja Matsuri or other local events, you’ll catch the heartbeat of Tokyo buzzing through Asakusa

Cultural Heritage:

Sanja Matsuri is one of Tokyo’s biggest and most energetic festivals held in the month of May for 3 days in Asakusa. It is deeply tied to the history of Sensoji Temple and Asakusa Shrine. The name “Sanja” means “Three Shrines” and refers to the three men who founded Sensoji in the 7th Century. The two fishermen; Hinanokuma Hamanari, Hinanokuma Takenari and the village chief; Hajino Nakatomo, who recognized the statue’s sacredness and built the temple.

Sanja Matsuri features over 100 mikoshi (portable shrines) including three massive ones belonging to Asakusa Shrine. These mikoshi are carried through the streets so the spirits can bless local businesses, residents and visitors. The festival is attended by more than 1.5 to 2 million people. Sanja matsuri is famous for its rowdy, high energy atmosphere, locals chant, play taiko drums and parade through the streets. Participants wear traditional happi coats and other festive colorful attire. It is a celebration of community strength, tradition and good fortune.

Step Back in Time:

Sensoji is a survivor. Damaged during World War II, the Temple was rebuilt as a symbol of Tokyo’s resilience. Hearing this story as you approach in your go kart makes the scene more powerful – the temple in front of you, the atmosphere around you, the voice of your guide reminding you that this city always rises again.

Visitors to Asakusa can take rides in a rickshaw (“jinrikisha”) originally introduced to Japan in the late 1800s. This mode of old time transportation still exists where pullers (“shafu”) dressed in traditional attire guide passengers through historic streets. It is a charming way to connect to the Edo-period atmosphere that Asakusa is known for.
